Most of my life my income has been about $10,000 a year. I haven't suffered. What I miss is the quality and value of public life that is financed by us all. Where are the inspiring ideas, the transcendent constructions, the powerful ideas that can grip us all? It strikes me that it's not a shortage of wages so much as a shortage of time and real interaction.
